Why You Shouldn't Buy A Dell, Gateway, Compaq, HP or any other "off the shelf" Computer.

Why You Shouldn't Buy A Dell, Gateway, Compaq, HP or any other "off the shelf" Computer.

Bully’s Bytes recommends custom built "open architecture" computers, rather than name brand, "proprietary architecture" computers. Why? Because 1. Custom built PC’s gives you more choice. You buy what you want or need and it is built to your specifications & needs.  You don't have to take something you don't want just because it is included in the system you are looking at. 2. Custom built PC’s can be serviced and reasonably priced parts obtained at virtually any computer shop in the world. This means less down time and more service choices for the system and that results in a more useful computer for you.

Custom built PC parts are easy to get, they're plentiful because they are all industry standard and are usually stocked by the many dealers who sell them.   Most branded computers are proprietary. When you own a proprietary computer the only place you can buy replacement parts is the manufacturer because nobody else sells them. That will cost you more because without competition for replacement parts, the manufacturer can charge whatever they want. The manufacturer is the only one who makes those parts for a particular branded machine.  Furthermore those parts are almost always different for every machine they build so the part has to be "special ordered" and that means more down time for you. The result is you pay their price wait for the part to be shipped. Meanwhile you go without your computer.  There is actually one manufacturer who purposefully undersizes power supplies so that they will fail after about three years.  When you go in to get it repaired (because that is the only place you can get it repaired, they tell you it will be 6 weeks before the part arrives, then try to sell you a new machine.

On the other hand, there is a wide variety of replacement parts from different manufacturers to choose from with non proprietary systems.  They are readily available at almost any computer store so you usually don't need to special order anything. Non proprietary computers are easier upgrade because the components plentiful. Most are available from dozens of different manufacturers so, competition keeps the prices low and you save.

Should you want to increase the speed of your processor, you don't have to throw the entire computer away; you just replace the chip, possibly the motherboard with a newer faster one. Most branded systems won't allow you to upgrade just CPU because they would prefer to sell you a new computer. That is a great deal for them but not so hot for you.

The best part about non proprietary computers is that they are built exactly the way you need them to be built with exactly the equipment on board that you need.  Furthermore they can be expanded and modified as your needs change.
